On eBay.com, "most categories" pay 13.6% of the total sale up to $7,500 per item. A set of categories pay something different — and if you have a Basic or higher store, a whole second table applies. Here is every exception, with what it means on a real sale.

Categories that pay more than 13.6%
- Books, movies & music (15.3%): a $25 book costs $4.22. Vinyl records are excluded and pay the standard rate.
- Jewelry (15% up to $5,000): a $300 ring costs $45.40.
- Women's handbags (15% up to $2,000): a $400 bag costs $60.40.
- Watches (15% up to $1,000): a $600 watch costs $90.40.
Note: clothing pays the standard 13.6% on eBay.com — it isn't a higher-fee category.
Categories that pay less
- Sneakers $150+ (8%, no per-order fee): a $220 pair costs $17.60. Under $150 they pay 13.6%.
- Guitars & basses (6.7%): a $900 guitar costs $60.70, and listings are free.
- Trading cards, comics & CCGs (13.25%): a $50 card costs $7.03.
- Coins & paper money (13.25%): bullion has its own rule (13.6%, or 7% on sales over $7,500).
- NFTs (5%) and heavy equipment (3%, 0.5% above $15,000).
The store table: where a Basic store pays off
With a Basic store or higher, many categories drop much further than the headline 12.7%:
- $500 laptop: $68.40 without a store → $37.15 with one (7.35%)
- $300 camera: $41.20 → $28.45 (9.35%)
- $400 car part: $54.80 → $46.40 (11.5%)
- $200 coin: $26.90 → $18.40 (9%)
The store table also lowers the cap: above $2,500 per item (or $1,000 for motors parts, $4,000 for coins) the rate drops to 2.35%.
Tiered vs whole-sale thresholds
In most categories the lower rate applies only to the part of the sale above the threshold (marginal tiers). Jewelry, handbags, bullion and sneakers are different: crossing the threshold changes the rate on the whole sale. A $5,100 bracelet ($459.40) costs less to sell than a $5,000 one ($750.40).
Frequently asked questions
Do these exceptions apply outside the US?
No. Each eBay site has its own table — eBay.ca is similar but has no jewelry, watch or handbag exceptions; the UK, Germany, France and Italy use completely different category tables for business sellers.
Who decides my category?
You do, when you list. If an item is listed in two categories, eBay charges the higher of the two fees.
Where can I calculate a specific item?
The US calculator has every category in this list, plus the store plans.
